I do love a red doberman(former hot boss had one).
If you want an attentive, well mannered but protective, smart dog get a female Border Collie.

+1 on the Doberman.. will never own a different breed. Easy to train, great guard dogs, and good with kids. If you decide to get one do your research on the breed. Link below is a breeder around the Baton Rouge area. The best dobes around! A litter will come about this summer. I'm thinking about getting another.

Another big +1 for dobermans, assuming you're going to be around to raise him. They take a lot of attention. You can't have a dobie locked in a kennel 8 hours a day. I found the bigger dobermans tended to be even more family oriented.

Since neither of us is home enough to have a dobie we have a labrador. We, for various reasons, opted for a chocolate. What we didn't know was that chocolates have a somewhat different personality than the blacks and yellows. They're goofier and hyper. Still great dogs though. Amazingly tolerant of my daughter. Very protective. If my daughter tries to go pet the bulldog next door through the fence my lab tries to get between them and barks at the bulldogs to stay back. Its funny to watch...

The original American family dog! With any dog, it's all in their upbringing. My pittie was a shelter rescue, gets bossed around by my 6 year old niece and tries to climb in my handicapped nephew's wheelchair to give him kisses. I'm a huge advocate for rescue.

At the end of the day, this is probably what will happen. I've been on a couple state wide available adoption sites too. There is a sweet little Bassett mix named Junie locally and a Catahoula girl near Ruston.

It's been "fun" to window shop though. Helps a little.

We have a six year old female Weimaraner and cats who co-exist peacefull in the same house. Weimaraners are beautiful, have very short fur so shedding is not a problem, are exceptional watch dogs and very smart.

I have a German Shepherd, my son has a Boston Terrier and my daughter has a Chihuahua (sp). Boston's are awesome! We used to have two of them but my wife didn't like the jingle of the smaller ones collar so she took it off. And just a few days after she took it off he broke out of the back yard and we never saw him again. I've had many of dogs in my 40 years and none of them compared to Bruiser Boy. Man I miss that dog! I've had labs, Goldens and mutts. I like the medium to large breeds but man those Bostons are awesome. They will bark if someone comes to your door but not in aggresion.

If I was to own a dog, it would have to be one that wouldn't have that dog body odor. My friend's family owned a retired greyhound for many years. I don't know of one time he had a bath, and he never smelled.

I have been living with bassets for almost thirty years.

Ours all came trained. My son saw one in a pet shop shortly after Magnolia died and raised it for a year and we picked up a rescue from the vet, so now I have two.

They have great temperaments and are smarter than you think.

My next one will be a rescue. There is a good rescue north of the lake, Looziana Basset Rescue.

Owning a Newfoundland in Louisiana should be against the law. It's animal cruelty.

We had one when I was growing up, in a different country. That dog wasn't happy unless he was sleeping in the snow.

    Read this:

    http://www.gad.net/Blog/2010/12/10/please-dont-buy-a-newfoundland-dog/

Temperature conditions are a concern. I have thought of that. Otherwise, the article makes them sound like a hoot. Life with a dog isn't worth it if all they do is sleep 99% of the time. ;)

Ho Lee Schitt is a Boerboel.

Good for you. Not too many folks know what they are.

They're a great breed. Bred as guard dogs and they are fabulous family dogs as well. The require excellent obediance training and are not for first time or novice dog owners. The do go up to 200 lbs.

Does it have to be a "breed". I mean I really love my Labradors, and they are great family dogs; But there is nothing wrong with a run-of-the-mill mutt.
I wouldn't want to give them up either.

Not a single thing wrong with them. We had a mixed pup for years. I'm just looking around at what's out there. I love dogs and meeting new kinds have always been enjoyable. :)

we have a husky here. Great with kids.....he tolerates the cat. However he's not a guard dog by any means...doesnt growl or bark. Most strangers that come in he just licks them all over. But...from the road apparently he looks menacing. So he keeps away anyone who may think of coming to ring the door bell.

eta-he loves what little cold weather we do get here, but during the rest of the year he is strictly an inside dog. has his own loveseat and likes the a/c left on about 70 degrees

I'm with Jb on this one, my english BD is easily the best dog I've ever encountered. She loves dogs and cats and adults and kids. I took her to a boarding house not long ago when I was forced out of town on a long weekend and returned to find out the man who owns it fell in love with her. He said she is by far the happiest dog he's ever met. We walk about an hour a day and meet new people every time. Everybody loves her and she's made hundreds of friends in my hood. They are prone to a few health risks, but if you buy one from a good bloodline they aren't hard to take care of. They say she'll calm down and turn into a doorstop one day but at 3.5 yrs she's a ball of energy. Highly recommended.

English bull dog gets my vote, but then again I am bias :) I have had such bad luck with dogs up until I found my girl, Izzy. Loved dogs as a kid, but the rotten ass mutts we would get to try and give my son a pet totally ruined me. Never thought I would ever consider another animal "a part of the family" but my bully just fits right in. Probably because we look alot alike :)
