      Barrel stamping should say .38 S&W Spl (or special on some older guns). If it's a modern J frame it will likely say .38 S&W Spl +P which is also fine. But if just says .38 S&W ( highly unlikely in 2024) that's a different cartridge altogether.

      I don't blame you on the raccoon, but the possum isn't going to hurt anything but itself unless you've got eggs from hens. I'd leave that one be. Relocating isn't a great option either because possums don't do well having to find new sources of food and water and will likely die as a result...

      If you're in a vehicle in a defensive shooting, I can't imagine having the time to put in ear pro. But yes, you'll almost certainly suffer from hearing damage to some degree.
