Had a '13 JKU and loved it. Kids had a blast when we'd just find a little mud hole. Wife would wonder why I'd go to work with a clean Jeep and come home muddy. Even got to run a few laps around Texas Motor Speedway with the local Jeep club there.

My old man's '78 CJ7. Rebuilt from the ground up with an AMC 360 under the hood. He bought it out of Arkansas from the guy who had it built. It's a fun rig, but not necessarily the "cruiser" my old man was wanting, so it sits in the shop. It currently is in search of a new home if anyone is looking for a new toy.

In general, what's he looking to get for it? I'm not currently in the market for a second jeep but I've always thought about an "outdoorsy" Jeep compared to the 2013 JK. I like the JK but it's a lot more "car" than Jeeps used to be. Jeep had to do that to increase their appeal and carry on the brand. But I've always considered going back to the basics.

Jeepbrahs, I am thinking about adding a trailer hitch for the initial purpose of hauling a uhaul trailer and ultimately haul a 4 Wheeler or small boat trailer. I have a 99 XJ Sport
    2 questions:
What is a good durable safe hitch?
Who is someone who is competent and reasonable or is anyone willing to help me attach it (being compensated of course).
I am willing go ahead and replace the the suspension if suggested or necessary.
    Thanks!

I did some research and it looks like an easy job. I was thinking it would require a torch and a welder but it looks like even I could do it.

If you need help mounting a receiver hitch, I'd be glad to help. You could take some measurements and go to the pic-a-part yard on Peters Rd. across from Boomtown Casino. You could get something close enough to cut and reweld for really cheap. I work for a metal shop in NOLA East. I have access to drill bits, nuts, and bolts. I also have 3 welding machines at home. It would be a simple job make something fit your Jeep. Lemme know if I can help. You could get a receiver hitch for like $35 at the junkyard on Peters Rd. You may even find one that's an exact fit

Thanks for the tip! It appears that almost every single XJ uses the same hitch so if I can find a ,jeep junkyard that would probably be the ticket. I heard there was one on the West Bank, does anybody know where it is?

There used to be one at the foot of the Huey P. Long on the Westbank side, but it disappeared years ago.If there is a Jeep junkyard in the Greater New Orleans Area, I'd sure like to take a stroll thru it

That may be the one I was told about but it seems that there may be another. I'm with you, sounds almost as fun as walking through the woods with a .22
As for the hitch, I think I'll just get a new setup, seems they can be had for 140 or under. I'd rather not have to worry about trying to break rusty bolts and dodging wasps.

So there are holes in the pseudo frame rails for the factory hitch option. Many of the aftermarket steel bumpers with recievers built in that used to be sold used these as mounting points.

trace out the pattern. most of the hitches sold for them include a 3/8" piece of steel with nuts welded to it to attach a hitch. once upon a time, i built a rear bumper for my old xj that used the same mounting points.

    HTH.

if I had a shop I'd build all kinds of stuff but such is life. Maybe one day . . .
