I've been looking into them and have my ideas of why I might go this route, but I'm curious how common they actually are. Have any of you guys built a monolithic upper AR, and if so, what upper did you go with?
Something to think about. I bought a Colt 6940 with the monolithic upper and sometimes wish I had bought the 6920. You most likely will need a special barrel nut and wrench and maybe barrel also, as the Colt does. Also If you end up not liking the forend or want something different you are stuck with either selling it or getting another upper. If Colt had been offering the stripped down LE 6920 OEM2 at the time I would have gone that route.
Buttanic makes a good point. Having the option to swap rails out is a major plus and I always prefer to use parts that are generally universal to AR's. I avoid custom fit parts because they are limited in what you can do with them.
I built a Mega, with a Noveske barrel. Most accurate AR platform I have ever shot... Or owned, and I've had POF, Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense... Monolithic upper, a good barrel and trigger... Will nor disappointed you!
