I just got it and was surprised by its lack of recoil... It has less then my 243 and 270... I love all 3 guns, but this is my primary hunting rifle now.

However I do not know the effective range of a 3030 on a deer.

I use mine when I am in the woods and won't be shooting more than 150 yards. If I am hunting over big fields with shots of 200 yards and more I grab another rifle.

Ok sitting in the stand with her today lol and there is no scope on this gun probably never will be.

The front sight on my Marlin is a bit too bulky and covers more of the target than I would like. You might want to keep your shots to about 100 yards or less. Any farther than that and you risk missing the vital "heart/lung" region.

My Marlin 30-30 is scoped and I love it. It's a great deer gun!! Enjoy yours.

+1 and I'd like to believe this to be true for the United States.

Yep, it's gotta be in the top 5-10 calibers. The win 94 and the marlin 336 are the most popular sporting rifles ever for a reason. Hurts the animal, not the shooter. Ammo has been tough to find lately, though.

Just curious, in how many states is it legal to hunt deer with .22?

Probably most of the ones taken with a .22 aren't legal to begin with. I remember my grandfather getting rid of some nuisance deer from his garden from time to time with a .22.

    I use a Marlin 336, with a 3-9x40 cabela's scope, I stoke it with Remington 150gr core locks.

Absolutely deadly on deer. That being said longest shot I've used it for was about 60 yards. Where I hunt, in most of my blinds I can't see 50 yards. I would have confidence in my 30-30 out to 100 yards. Over 100 yards my eye sight becomes a factor.

    And---
If you got it for $250, in decent condition, you done good!

Oh the gun is in excellent condition! It has very quickly become my favorite gun. I did however turn around and buy a 270/ scope combo for 300 and I like it also, but it was bought for long range and hog hunting. Its going to be easy to mount a light to.
