Since there appear to be 2 posts on this one I will repeat. While serving overseas I received briefings about situations like those mentioned in the story by the Office of Special Investigations, an agency not known for their sense of humor.

Whether you find it easy to believe or not, these officers just might be serious.

So what kind of credence do you allow these reports? I'm genuinely curious, because though on the face of it we make light, I believe we'd all prefer to get some more or less first-hand knowledge.

Remember, we laugh at these reports primarily because they seem to lack any corroborating information.

Some of the best documentation I have seen is re-presented in this documentary

There are some good, and some flaky productions there IMHO. The ones by Chris Pinto are amazing, A Lamp in the Dark being my current favorite. The short report on the one linked is that millions of people have claimed to see and / or experience something that defies conventional explanation. They display the media accounts of the more credible ones for more than 40 minutes, generally spending less than a minute on each. Surely some are pranks, and misidentifications that get sensationalized to sell newspapers. But, if millions of people all say they saw something, maybe they actually saw something.

From my casual study on the subject, most of the experiences aren't good, and carry a heavy spiritual significance, that spirit being one that is not good. I am not dogmatic in my beliefs due to lack of personal experience, but I think there is more to it than most people are comfortable admitting.
