    Nice, checkering is something that I've never been able to master. I just have the tools to basically touch up existing checkering.

    You are making a very good start. It looks like you are holding the stock in your lap while cutting the checkering. You will get better results with a proper checkering cradle. I made my checkering cradle from the instruction shown in Monty Kennedy's book, Checkering and Carving Gunstocks.

    yeah i may need to look into a checkering cradle, and some better lighting and probably a magnifying glass... i've done a lot of wood burning, but never even tried carving or checkering. i was trying to get it finished for memorial day, but i had to work. it's my boyd stock on my grandfathers p17. when he was done with jumpin out of planes in ww2 he bought this rifle and retired to the country and grew blackberries.
