The absolutely do in the quality replicas. On FFR they are connected solidly to the main 2x4 rear hoop, rear subframe and outrigger for suspension.

Thanks everyone. Yep. Same one I was working on when you came look at my white car.

I was going to do satin black stripes but when I got it home and polished, I think the color and "liquid graphite" (as a friend coined it) look would be broken up too much by it. I originally wanted it to look like Mercury but couldn't find the right shade of silver so this color won out. Now, I'm very happy and glad I didn't find the other shade. I want to keep the puddle of molten graphite look. But, if I decide later I want to, it wouldn't be hard to add them.
