HELP! I am new to reloading . I am using the Dillon RL550. I called Dillon to purchase the dies for my 300 saum when the box showed up it only had 2 dies in it. I called Dillon's tech Department and they informed me that they do not sell a crimping die for the 300 saum and that you do not need to crimp for a bolt gun. I informed him that I was using an AR platform for the 300 (DPMS 300SAUM). He said to call Huntington Dies and ask them what is available that he does not know of any crimping dies for 300 saum . I called Huntington Dies and all I get is a buzzy signal. Any infomation would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly the cartridge and shooting platform to learn how to reload on, but you do not need to crimp rifle rounds (even for an AR) as long as you have sufficient neck tension.

    Ritten is correct (as usual).

Crimping for any type of rifle (except a tube fed lever gun or African caliber) is unnecessary and even detrimental to accuracy. (Why would you want to crease a bullet jacket with a crimp? It can do the bullet no good.) The regular old fashioned sizing dies that use an expander button will put .003" - .004" neck tension on the bullet. That is more than enough to prevent bullet movement in any action type, even auto's.

Bottle-neck rifle dies are 2 die sets consisting of a full length sizer and a bullet seating die. Most/many seater dies do contain a crimp feature but as I said, I do not recommend their use. To adjust the seater die, screw the die down over an empty case until you feel the crimp 'ridge' hit the case mouth. If you want a crimp (why?) move the die slightly lower and set the lock ring. To eliminate the crimp feature, at that point raise the die a half turn then set the lock ring.

    General comments:

For use in factory chambers, I do not recommend bushing type f/l dies, but rather the conventional (and cheaper) type using the expander button.

Also, I am not a fan of small base dies. They are not necessary (even in gas guns) and over work the brass.

Ping me if you have questions.

Thank you for taking the time. I wish I shot something other than 45/70 and 300 saum
