I know that steel shot is required for duck hunting, but is it required for dove hunting? I have not gone dove hunting in 5 or 6 years so I wanted to check to see what the current law is.

    In certian WMA's it is.

If you can't determine and want to hunt at one, I would bring lead and steel shot - just to have your bases covered.

steel is for waterfowl BUT as brewer pointed out, on a WMA (or during duck/goose season and near a known waterfowl hunting area) if you are found with lead, a WF agent may ascertain that you could possibly shoot at waterfowl with that lead...
but if you are carrying bagged dove anywhere (legally) and they are checked and found to have lead shot in them, you're ok.

I e-mailed LA Wildlife and Fisheries to see what the official rules were and this is what they had to say.

"Lead shot is legal for dove hunting except on some National Wildlife
Refuges, where steel-shot is required for all bird-hunting."

    Good luck,
