What is the legality of bringing a handgun to a hotel room in a bag with the clip outside the gun in transport to the room. This is in the state of Louisiana.

If it's your hotel room, you can bring it in, (provided that the hotel does not have a no-firearms policy). I have never been to a hotel in Louisiana that had a no-firearms policy

If it's someone elses hotel room, I would "assume" that you would need to ask their permission. My line of thinking is, you need to ask permission to enter someones home with a firearm, and their hotel room could be construed as their rented "home" while they are staying there. Either way, it's a good idea to ask if it's not your room.

You would be fine once you got into the room but carrying it in a bag would be concealed, so that would be illegal. How many time do LEOs stop you on your way to your hotel room.

What if it is in the bag unloaded? I know in wi a bag counts as a case. In that case, it would be an encased forearm correct?

You can transport the gun, unloaded, in a bag to your room. How do you think the 100's of handgun sport shooters that don't have CHP get their gear inside their rooms? You aren't carrying the gun for purposes of concealment or defense.

+1, just like when you go to the shooting range not much difference, its unloaded inside your storage/range bag with no real intent to hold harm.

There is no legal distinction here as to loaded/unloaded, like there is in California.
D.Z. or other authority, pls correct me if I am in error.

In Texas, if you have the gun loaded and on your hip in a hotel room it is legal. You've paid money for that room and to live in it. That is YOUR RESIDENCE.
I would assume the same logic would apply in Louisiana....even moreso as 1) open carry is legal, 2) they consider even your car an extension of your home, certainly a hotel room would apply too

How is carrying a unloaded gun in a bag concealed?

    1. because in most legal circles, a bag you are carrying is still considered "on your person"

2, What does the load condition have to do with anything?...It doesn't.

now, this is where everyone's favorite,...officer discretion comes in.

If you are coming from your car to the room, you will not have a problem. randomly walking down the street with a gun in your bag with no permit, will most likely get you a 14:95 charge depending on how you came to find yourself in a conversation with LEO in the first place.

    Nolacop,

Thanks for the true information. I'm still always amazed at the assumptions people make about 14:95. Including some officers I have known and know.

Real simple. Your car IS your home. Your hotel room IS your home. Your business IS your home. To and from your home(s) is fine, outside your home(s) is not. THAT is what CHL is for (and why wouldn't you go and get that anyway?).
