Looking for Basic Firearms Training for a Female in Monroe

I have a friend that is looking for some firearm training in the Monroe/North LA area.

Her neighbors house was broken into a few days ago and she is wanting to get a pistol for home defense.
She has had some exposure to shotguns and pistols 20+ years ago, but hasn't been around any recently.

She is not opposed to traveling some, but prefers not to have to go to NO or BR area.

She'll also be looking to purchase a firearm. I recommended a pistol, either Glock 17 or S&W M&P 9, whichever fits her best.
If there is somewhere she can try out some different guns, get training and buy the gun all in one place that would be nice.

The g19 would probably fit her better. Does she have smallish hands? I love my 19.

Is the grip different on the 19 and 17?

Her hand are not real small, I'd say normal lady size.
Smaller than mine but not as small as my wife's.

I am not an instructor, but I have a M&P 9C and a Shield if she would like to shoot them. Perhaps if anyone else is in the area that had some other guns (Glock(s), we could let her shoot a few to see what she likes. A guy I work with teaches the CCL class, not sure if he has any other NRA certs.

Pretty sure I could borrow a Glock 23.

I normally shoot at TP Outdoors, I think they rent guns, not sure.

I told her to go by TP to handle some different pistols and see if the offered rentals.

If TP doesn't have rentals and we can get a few different guns I may set up a time to meet her at TP and try them out. My wife would come along.

Do we have any lady members in the Monroe area? She seems like she would be more comfortable around other lady shooters.

Don't know any lady shooters, but would be glad to go over just the basics and let her shoot some guns. Totally up to her.

Also, has she called the OPSO to see if they do any beginner shooting classes at the parish range?

I would recommend her calling the OPSO range. There are some pretty good folks that run that range. The range master's wife is an avid shooter and believe she helps put on classes for women.

I am a Female Firearms Instructor and if I had to pick between the two guns for a female I would recommend the S&W M&P 9

I'd recommend she try out at least 5 guns minimum before she purchases one. If she goes to a gun range they should have some she can rent.
