Yesterday I pulled a Ruger .22 auto pistol out of the safe - had not fired in a long time. Loaded magazine and proceded to fire. About 3 rounds into the magazine I experienced a failure to chamber. Long story short the petroleum based lube had started to gum up and slowed/prevented functioning. Any suggestions on a good synthetic lube that will not gum up over time with extended storage or lack of use?
After a flushing with WD40 it went back to working like a singer sewing machine.

If I'm shooting a safe queen that has been stored, I'll clean it for the reason you posted. I use Weapon Shield with success.

.22lr is pretty dirty from the powder. It seems to worse now than in the past. I have found that almost any lube will collect enough of the powder residue that it will eventually fail if not cleaned. Spray lube seems to be in order during the shooting session as a band aid to the real problem.

I never had a problem leaving a .22 in a safe long enough.

Some guys prefer dry lube. There are many lubes that will work including ATF. Rem Oil or CLP is easy to find and easy to use spray. I have a friend that loves http://www.militec-1.com/

My personal take is to use a lube that is adequate and clean the .22 often. I touch up at about half a brick interval & never more than about 2 bricks before getting a thorough cleaning. I like a boresnake for .22 to bring with me to the range.

There are some videos that detail the Ruger .22 disassembly as some are tricky to do.

You should wipe down and lightly oil before shooting after long term storage.
WD 40 is part of the problem, it gums the works. Use any quality oil, the fully synthetic oils work very good on guns. I prefer the heavier grades such as Mobil 1 20W50.
I concur with Storm 52 Weapon Shield is a good CLP.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'm going the full synthetic route. And as I use the other firearms in the safe I'll clean and lube with the synthetic oil. I know there are other ones in there "gummed up" but its that pesky time thing.
    Again thanks.

Brownells sells a synthetic lube especially for self loading firearms. I have some at the house they sent me to try. I'll post the name later.

does anyone here use grease on their semi-auto slides/frames? I read an article advocating grease vs oil for that application and have been trying it a little with some breech plug grease I bought for almost nothing in Walmarts hunting season close-out. So far so good...

    Hi everyone,

My name is Andy. I am from G96 Products Co. I came across this thread and I want to respond. However, I do not want to violate any of the forum rules. Please go to the contact page on my website where you can send me an email. I will be more than happy to answer any questions that anyone has on the military approval of my CLP.

Petalanca, please contact me and I can get you set up with a local distributor.

    Thanks everyone!

    Andy
