Just got in a carbine and garand from the CMP and it looks like they stripped the stock on the carbine because it was fairly rough to the touch. It seemed to also have cosmoline or some other oil in it. I sanded it down with fine grit sandpaper but was stuck on how or if to finish it. Any ideas? I would like it to seem at least semi-authentic ww2 but hold up.

is it Walnut, birch or beech?
Mine is walnut, and all I did was (after c eaning/degreasing it) rub it with boiled linseed oil, allow that coat to "soak" for a few minutes and then buff it with steel wool until it is not sticky to the touch. Apply a few coats over a couple days.

It's a walnut stock with a very dark color. I was thinking either BLO or tung oil. I also thought about using the birchwood casey tru-oil gun finish and then buffing it with the finishing compound to get a flat finish. I'm not exactly sure what the BC oil is, linseed and some other stuff i think.
