I am looking to get an inexpensive (around $300) rifle for deer hunting. I will be going maybe once a year at the most so I am not going to spend much on a rifle. Academy currently has the Mossberg ATR 100 .308 on sale for $299. For those of you that own one, what experience do you have with it? I thought of getting a remington 770 but I have read nothing but bad reviews of it. Another gun I am considering is the Savage Axis .308. All of these guns are in the $300 price range.

The Mossberg is HANDS DOWN better quality than the Remington 770. For most people shopping at Academy in that price range, I STRONGLY suggest the 100ATR over the 770. The Savage Axis isn't carried by Academy, but it would be another gun I would recommend in that price range even though I don't know as much about it.

No, Academy does not carry the Savage Axis. I think Dick's Sporting Goods does though. I saw the 770 on sale at Dick's.

I found that Walmart sells the Savage Axis .308 for $298. Dick's sporting goods has it for $420. I like that the Savage has a removable magazine so I think I will go with the Savage.

check the rifle carefully at academy a friend of mine bought two for his sons at the same time and neither one had a ejector on the bolt and academy in alexandria has a ZERO return policy on firearms which left him with mossbergs customer service which is practicaly a joke

You could also get a Mosin in 7.62x54 for about $150 depending on grade, make, and condition. Ammo is hot and cheap and plentiful. There are softpoints for hunting, along with some other loads.
