My son is 11 years old. He has been hunting with me since he was able to walk. Year before last we really started working on getting him his first deer. That first year we seen a few does in the woods but while trying to get the perfect shot they ended up running off. We tried all that season to get one but it was not to be.
Last year was a rough year. It was so warm last year and we ended up not hunting all that much. Only seen 2 does in the woods and no shot on either.
This year I decided I was going to let him use an old Rossi 12g Crack barrel instead of the rifle. He did not want to use a 12g with buck shot....or even a shotgun at all. Didnt think it would kill a deer. I explained to him that all but two of my deer were killed with a shotgun.
Saturday was the first time we were able to get to our hunting land in Alabama. Our Stand stays in the woods all year long. When we got to Alabama that night it was dark and when we headed to our stand that morning it was dark also. Going in blind so to speak other than the fact that I grew up on that land and know it like the back of my hand. We forgot our face mask, I could not find one of my gloves and a few other things seemed to be going wrong.
On our way to the stand we jumped up a deer but it was dark and with the flashlight I only seen the deer's butt runing away. When we got in our stand and got situated it all felt right again. We both love being in the woods and it felt good to be back out there in the cold enjoying nature. As it turned daylight our attention perked up. We sat there for about 2 hours without even seeing a squirrel. He was getting antsy and wanted to get down and try walking around and sitting different places so we did. We ended up not seeing anything during the morning hunt but did see some good fresh sign. (scrapes, poop, rubs etc.)
We went and ate breakfast and hung out with some family for a while and then about 2 pm we started getting dressed again to head out.
We got back in our stand about 3 pm and sat there for a while. We were at least seeing a few birds and squirrel. We usually dont blow on our grunt and bleet call too much but since nothing seemed to be moving we were blowing on the call some and about 10 min before dark a nice buck popped out of the brush. I got my sons attention next to me and told him straight a head I seen a deer. Then when he put his head down to eat I seen it was a nice buck.
The buck was making his way towards us and I told my son when he got a chance to hit him broadside to take his shot. He was waiting for him to walk out from behind this bush when all of the sudden the buck stopped, turned and looked directly at us in the tree. I have seen that look before and its usually followed a quick dash off into the woods. I told my son to "bust'em"!!! He shot and the deer dropped right where he stood. Excitement quickly overtook both of us.
I cant even explain how proud and happy I was to be able to share that moment with him. I was not able to share that moment with my father and I really feel now that we both missed out on a great feeling. I am so happy that I was there with my son to be apart of that.....something that will never happen again. His first deer......his first buck......All in one.
I hope that if you even remotly like hunting or if your son likes hunting that you get to share in that experience with each other. It was worth every dollar spent and every min spent in the woods.

Its a 6 point buck that weighed about 165lbs.
I am having him mounted for my son.
Also, just a note. The gun in the picture that is laying on the deer is a Winchester Ranger 30-30. It was not the gun used by my son that day. I think my dad must have put it across the deer for the pictures and I never noticed it was my gun instead of his gun. I was so excited the whole evening is a blur. :mrgreen:

and it was with a Winchester 30/30.... killed plenty with it! I have 6yo and 18 yo sons and the oldest can't seen to kill his first one, we hunt on public land which no baiting and high pressure hunting make it tough, you really have to hunt. I can't wait for that day that they kill. Thank you for sharing love the story and please tell that little man congratulations!!
