What is the best way to maintain a nickel plated finish firearm? If the plating has already started flaking on an antique gun, what is the best way to prevent further damage? Thanks

On older nickel plating don't use any aggressive solvents that promise to dissolve copper. Particularly once the integrity of the nickel has been compromised. Older nickel finishes were applied electrolytically and required a coat of copper to be put down to the steel before a layer the nickel was applied. If you dissolve the copper under the nickel the nickel will begin to flake off in greater quantities.
