    Vanilla Gorilla: I agree. ;)

Besides, what is a healthy discussion without a sprinkle of different points of view?

Did you know, by the way, that many Russians defiantly call Putin "Pukin"? While it sounds like "puking" in English, in Russian this colloquialism sounds & means & is close to "farting". Gotta speak Russian to fully understand this satiric twist. :)

just to add, Crimea is a peninsula, not an island as depicted in the maps.

Although it almost is if you look at it from Google Maps Sat view. Lot's of swampy region where it connects to the rest of the mainland.

Regardless of the peninsula's history, nothing justifies the invasion of a sovereign country. My hope that these events do not embolden other regimes to proceed with their agenda, seeing how powerless and leaderless we are these days.

The problem is who is asking for what, and who is who in uniform.

You got the ousted guy asking for Russia to do all it can to help,
the new Gov. saying stay out,
Unidentified Uniformed Military? Militia? who knows taking over two different Airports?
Pro-Russian Civilians, armed, challenging Ukrainian Military.

Lots of confusion going on. It's ripe for a Boil-Over of Epic proportions.

The bigger issue is Putin's pretext for involving the Russian Army. He claims he is protecting Russians. The issue is that other countries including NATO members Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Countries that are in the early stages of NATO Membership like Moldova all have sizeable Russian Populations. The issue gets complex. Turkey has a 200+ year old Treaty signed by Russia that says if the Crimeia is handed over to a third party it must be Turkey.

My bud has a wife from Ukraine. Feedback from her family is that they are not seeing anything change yet.

From her and her families standpoint they feel that the EU is not good for thier country, and have no issues with The Russian takeover.

They are from Dneprodzerzhinsk and Dnepropetrovsk.

Not that we can do anything about it.

If there was dual between Putin and O....Putin would show up with a AK, and O would show up with a Basketball.

Well... IMO it looks like Putin has pulled off a coup d'tat so to speak.
So far it's been relatively bloodless.... But as others have stated... This thing could blow up into a full blown civil war in an instant.
It's a tinder box for sure.

This is the Soviet Union coming back together before our eyes.

Could Poland, Czech, Romania, Hungary be next?

    Cold War II perhaps?

Russia has to move quickly to resolve this. The markets are already killing then and their currency is taking a huge hit. I've often seen people on this forum cheer leading for Putin. Everything people think Obama might be Putin is ten fold.

Well, if this is true, Putin has laid down the gauntlet.

Russian military issues ultimatum to Ukraine: Surrender by 5 a.m. on March 4 or face attack

That would be 9PM tonight, our time. So I guess we will soon find out how far he's willing to push all this- or at least whether or not he's willing to begin.

Does the world really need all this East vs West drama crap ramped up to Cold War levels- AGAIN?? :dunno:

    Closer every hour it seems.

Russia has gone BEYOND merely controlling what is theirs.

    From what I'm reading;
Russia controls all roads, airports, and seaports in Crimea.

    and allegedly(could be false media)
The Russian naval commander in Crimea is demanding that Ukrainian forces on the peninsula surrender by 5 a.m. Tuesday(2100 our time today)
or face a “military storm,” Russia’s Interfax news agency reported, quoting a Ukrainian Defense Ministry source.

    However,
the Russian Defense Ministry denied the report, calling it “utter nonsense.”
A ministry spokesman in Moscow said no Russian ultimatum has been given to the Ukrainian military in Crimea.
A spokesman for the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea issued a similar denial.
“Such reports are utter rubbish,” the unidentified spokesman told Interfax.
“Attempts to set us against each other will fail.”
Which could be true. Just saying.

    The US seems to think differently releasing this statement;
The US conceded on Sunday that Moscow had “complete operational control of the Crimean peninsula”
and announced that the secretary of state, John Kerry, will fly to Kiev in an attempt to halt a further Russian advance into Ukraine.
