I recently picked up a Eddystone P14 Enfield from Cabela's of all places for only $149.99. It was painted black and the stock had a heavy brown shellac covering it. They felt someone had destroyed the rifle. To me it looked like the way some countries prepared their rifles for long term storage. I know India and Australia both prepared their rifles for long term storage this way. I didn't know at the time but suspected that both countries received quantities of this rifle.
So for the price I figured I couldn't loose. After I removed the paint and shellac I ended up with a rifle that had most of the blue intact and a dark but otherwise good looking stock. It also has matching numbers between the barrel, receiver, and bolt. Plus the barrel's lands and grooves look really good.
The front portion of the hand guard is a Remington and the butt plate was also poorly fitting, heavily rusted, and not Eddystone. I called Springfield Sporters in Pennsylvania and purchased a new old stock Eddystone butt plate. It fits the Eddystone stock much better. I'm not goIng to switch out the Remington hand guard as it matches the rest of the stock.
I have some before and after images for you.
