We have one of those systems where there's a buried wire running the perimeter of the yard to send signal to a shock collar on the dog. This afternoon, we noticed the transmitter, which is located outside in the garage, was beeping as though there was a break in the wire, but I can't see anywhere a limb fell and could have broken the wire. I think maybe the transmitter got fried when the power went off during the storm this morning.

Anyone on here do that kind of work or know how to troubleshoot such a thing?

to test the transmitter, just take a 2 foot piece of wire and put it from terminal to terminal..
if its good your transmitter will stop beeping.. if it does then its your wire.. in the ground..

it is almost cheaper to just run new wire..

Well, I have read about similar troubleshooting online but I only used about a foot of wire and under the cover of the transmitter it says to use a 10 foot loop and reset the switch to account for the shorter amount of wire so I need to do that over.

I also just read that the transmitters are warrantied for life and they will replace them for lightning strikes. There is a tree within 20 feet or so of where the wire runs that was struck earlier today so I'm thinking maybe that's it.

if it goes over the tree roots somewhere or somewhere close, that is where I would start..

the actual wire can be re spiced and is an easy fix.. IF you know where it is..

    right. that's the trick.

nothing obvious so I'm going with the transmitter being bad and will do a couple more tests on that.

you all should check out havahart wireless…their wireless dog fence doesn't require any digging and it is real easy to set up…the area it covers is so much bigger than all of the other ones ive seen too

Ours is pet stop brand. I have 6 acres covered by the fence so when I had a break that I did not cause I called the guy that did the install. He used a toner like you would use on a data com system but it had a handle one it instead of a probe. I have made a few repairs on cuts I made and knew where they were. I used a butt splice connector that I filled with marine grade silicone.
