Fast forward to minute 6:49 where the Commander in Chief thanks the services and forgets the Coast Guard. AT minute 7:27 a voice in the back yells Coast Guard and the Commander in Chief laughs, says "Coast Guard?" and blows him off, never acknoledging the we have Guadians serving over there also. We just had a reserve get back from Afghanistan and during their first 2 weeks they were assigned to protect a portion of the base in case of attack....all they had were 9mm pistols. After 2 weeks they gave them rifles.

He didn't forget. He simply forgot that his plan to disband the Coasties, and fully integrate them, TSA, and Homeland Security into the new National Defense Force, hasn't been made public, yet.

When I was deployed to Saudi for Operation Desert Shield we had US Coast Guard boats patroling around the port where we were off loading ships.
Mr O is a douche. That said, how many people expect to find Coasties assigned to the 'Stan? Their PR people really havn't gotten the word out.

Exactly. And he froze up when his slow brain failed him.

My Father fought in Vietnam in the Coast Guard.

You know, I knew they had some important duties but I thought they were solely stateside based, protecting our borders. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't know we had Coast Guard in Vietnam or currently serving in Afghanistan.

Cat, don't worry... Many don't know what we do or what we have done... BUT I EXPECT MY COMMANDER IN CHIEF TO KNOW..

I am a Chief in the United States Coast Guard assigned to Marine Safety Unit Baton Rouge. For seven years of my career I was assigned to the Gulf Strike Team in Mobile, AL. We responded to oil spills, hazmat releases, sunken ships, and weapons of mass destruction incidents in 13 states, the Carribean, and South America. Some might not think much of it and also say "WMD". Yes..

Our team responsded to 9/11 we were at ground zero conducting air monitor and testing for agents. Responded to and controlled hazmat releases from the Space Shuttle Columbia in Texas. My Team also responded to the anthrax incident in Boca Raton, FL and I went to D.C. and actually dressed out, entered, and sampled anthrax in Senator Dachles office.

Many don't give the Coast Guard credit for much and per capita we aren't in harms way like the Army and the Marines, but we are out there and we do sacrifice.

Thank you all for the replys of support and thanks for letting me vent.

And for Scubasteve, make all the jokes you want...... If it weren't for Coasties the Navy wouldn't have any good looking children. When you hear "keep the home fires burning...guess who's putting the LOG on the fire".

Very true. I've always been involved the Coast Guard, my dad is a Captain with currently stationed at D8HQ and I was a civilian employee for 8 years, including during Katrina. The one thing that stood out was that nothing was ever done for credit or glory. I watched those guys save over 30,000 people during Katrina with very little fanfare. And none of them cared. One thing I've always admired and tried to emulate.

My daddy was in the Goast Guard in WWII

Another admirable man and another dangerous mission.... During WWII the Coast Guard manned Navy ships and were the escorts of the goods and cargo ships that the U-Boats so loved to sink in the Atlantic. Or on the other side of the world, Coast Guardsmen drove the landing craft for the invasions. Signalman 1st Class Douglas A. Munroe, the only Coast Guardsmen to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Every branch of the Military including the Coast Guard is now deployed for the war efforts. That is the nature of war. Many do not realize, during WW II, the Coast Gaurd had the highest percentage of casualties. Their main duties were escorting the Convoys of Liberty ships.
Anyway,,,it is a shame that the Coast Guard is usually forgotten and taken for granted. Those guys are all heroes IMO. But...IMO, all politicians are useless. They no longer represent the people. And even when they do mention our armed forces; when it comes time to keep promises by funding the VA, they forget.

    I didn't realize this.

And, yes, they are taken for granted by many.
