As said before, the .308 is a good round for hunting. The 770 meets a lot of expectations for hunters wanting to hit a paper plate at 50yds most of the time, cost less than the gas to make two trips to their hunting camp, and comes with a scope that is clearer than a dirty coke bottle.
I have a 700 and it would be my choice. My brother bought a 770 in 243 (more for fun weird choice I know). But he changed the scope and hits a 8" gong at 300 yards every time. Not my choice for a rifle but okay, but all I have to go on is his 770.
770 is an upgrade from the 710,in which some of those were junk depending on if they were in the recall, mine was not,as far as it being a good rifle,i would say yes,as far as being an elite rifle no,but in my book the definition of a good rifle is (one that hits its mark) ive shot a couple of 770s and 710s,and if their used right they will do just as good as any 700,and as bang for your buck rifle and for the game we have around here i don't think it will let you down being chambered in .308
For the people who dont like the 770 im not tryin to cause a riot on this thread just giving my thoughts. Hope i helped.
I've had a 770 in .270 and had no complaints. Considering it was out of the box with a scope for $300 I don't find them to be a bad deal for someone who rarely uses it to hunt
