This little nib sticks out on my older revolver. What's it for?
When the cylinder is open it spins freely BUT if it's loaded and open then the rim of each cartridge rubs up against the nib on the side of the gun, so must be a reason for that?!? To load it without the cylinder spinning freely? -or- to keep people from playing Russian roulette since the cylinder won't free spin when it's loaded because of this nib?

I might also add that my newer revolver has no such nib on it so why the change?

    Is that a Charter Arms?

It keeps the cylinder from being pulled off towards your hand when the cylinder is open.

I've looked through both of my Colt shop manuals and so far can't find that piece referred to anywhere. However I should mention that on a Colt that bump comes off with the side plate unlike the S&W system. There are many people here who know more about this subject that'll be along to help directly I'm sure.
