    That's a MAS Mle 1936. It's a bolt action; what looks like a gas tube under the barrel is actually a bayonet. Mine was from the first production run after France was liberated. When I first got the rifle, I posted a pic at Gun&Game, joking that it was "never fired and only dropped once". A Frenchman corrected me on a couple of things. Mine was a postwar rifle, and even though the German victory in France was quick, it wasn't cheap. In May 1940 the French soldiers killed an average of 2400 Germans a day, in June that went up to 4900 a day. The problem was that the Germans killed twice as many Frenchmen.
