I bought a bubba'd S&W model 4046 (.40 cal, DAO) at the last Lafayette gun show 2 weeks ago. Last weekend I disassembled the frame, stripped the blue and white paint off with laquer thinner and a stiff nylon brush. New grips came in yesterday. It came out nice the satin stainless finish was undamaged under the paint and it has no holster wear. S&W reported it was built Sept 96 and shipped to the Baton Rouge Constable (desk gun, maybe?).
I only had an hour, so I only brought it and my P-64 carry gun (9 mm Mak, SA/DA). I stayed on the slow side with the 4046 making sure I wasn't putting preasure on the trigger before I got it on target. I was surprised I had no trouble going back and forth between the two. The 4046 has a 10+ lb. trigger pull and the P-64 is a little under 3 lbs SA. The only difficulty I had was transitioning to the P-64 in double action (somewhere around 20 lbs).
And no it wasn't at 25 yards, guessing around 15. All shots stayed on the 8 1/2 X 11 peices of paper. I consider that a success for 57 yr old eyes, 4' barrel with a 10+ lb pull, and a 3 1/4" barrel fired quickly.
For those that don't know what a 40 is I can enlighten you, and you can tell me something about this caliber consolidation thing everyone keeps talking about. LOL
I gave it up today after about 45 minutes, I was soaked, and the blue and black P-64 became too hot to handle even throwing a white towel over it when shooting the 4046. One advantage to stainless I never thought about.
