:bowrofl: Lafayette is one of, if not THE, safest city in LA...

    I call bull..

You have any idea how many violent crimes occurr that you never hear about?

When I worked EMS, I ran more call for shootings in Lafayette in a shorter amount of time than any other city or town that I ever worked in and that was before Katrina hit

This is the first or second result when you google crime rate followed by new orleans, lafayette, baton rouge, etc. New Orleans has a really high murder rate, I'd assume it has to do with personally conflicts not random violence, if you follow my meaning. Anyways, BR and surrounding areas were the lowest rated, pretty much tied with Lafayette, monroe, and alexandria with 5% or lower. Shreveport managed a 7, with New Orleans at an 11. Chalmette and Mandeville were tied for the highest that I checked at 21. I didn't bother looking at the areas around Lake Charles, Monroe, etc. because I don't know which are populous, which are rural, etc.

After what I just found out. I hope it all comes out in the wash. Young man had this being the fifth break-in in his home! Messed up for all involved!

That's the same thing I heard. I have faith that our justice system will work if this is the case. It is a sad situation that a young man died, but after this many times somebody breaks in to their home/vehicle and nothing happening with law enforcement, it was only a matter of time that karma caught up with these little bastards. I do know the shooter was a 4.0 student and a respectable member of the community. I once read a post here that is fitting for this case, "You read stupid games, you win stupid prizes."

The boy that died is the little brother of one of my wife's students. Very sad. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, prayers for the family.

    The Nasty New Orleans.
Yet another reason to avoid Lafayette. I will never understand why tens of thousands of people press together into a giant mass of humanity just to break into cars, drive without licences, and get shot. A complete ********. I will hunt wild pigs in knee deep mud in the palmetto bottoms in summer with water moc's on every step...and even armed the same, I wouldn't set foot in Lafayette anywhere.
I used to go there on spring break but since katrina its just gone to hell.Should have left it to turn back to swamp after Rita.

What do you expect? It is full of "lower quality" people who constantly drain my tax dollars with their welfare. A haven for the uneducated teet suckers.

Opelousas...I live right outside. No way in hell will my kids go to school here...

Opelousas really that bad? Serious question. I pretty much grew up in Arnaudville (well the outskirts; i dont even think we were on the map) back in the 80's. hadn't been that way in a while.
