Side charging AR?

Help a noobie out please! I see "side charging" AR's popping up. Forgive my ignorance, but what advantages does side charging provide? Disadvantages? Anyone have a side charger and provide hands on feedback?

Side charging rifles are nothing new. I seem to remember them when I was getting into shooting in 2005ish.

I shot a JP LRP-07 in 6.5cm for a while. I didn't notice any disadvantages in its design, but it did allow me to manipulate the rifle w/o having to take my eyeballs out of the scope.

Also, shooting suppressed I didn't get any gas blow back in my face.

I shoot a JP for competition/recreation and not afraid to rack it in my work vehicle. The only drawback I can hang a hat on is being a Lefty. Side chargers are a deal breaker for me since I either have to roll the weapon onto its right side and go over the optic or use my strong hand. Both are slow and not ideal for competition or real life **** happening. if I was Righty I'd have one already.
