The XD sights are awful tight. A hammer and brass punch would be your best bet for removing the OEM sights. A sight pusher MIGHT work for installation of aftermarket sights, after some fitting. The Dawson sights come with an aluminum or aluminum with teflon tipped installation tool.

I have changed the sights on 3 XD's. Hammer, punch, and vise are all the tools I used. As I said earlier, the sights do need to be fit to the dovetail.

It's been a while but the Dawson sights come with instructions on which way to go. If I'm not mistaken, out to the left, in from the left. On all 3, I used the Dawson fiber optic front sights and 2 have the Heinie rear and the other has the Dawson fixed rear. You will need a solid vise with padded jaws and you can't be afraid to swing the hammer to get the OEM sights out. You will need to remove some material from the bottom of the sight dovetail, not the slide, the sight. Go very slow! Don't take too much off.

As Scooter said, they are hell! A pusher won't budge them, BIG hammer and brass punches will work. Looking down the slide to the front almost all sights go out and in on the right (ejection side) Take the Dawson tool and sharpen it up real nice and make a toothpick out of it, that's all it's good for....:p

I have the big daddy adjustable tool but it won't move the old ones out. Done plenty sight work and it will work to put new ones in, but as Scooter pointed out it's a lot of trial fitting, filing and careful stoning to do it right.

$150 multi gun universal sight tool for semi-auto pistols...Works great on some guns but removal can still be rough. According to the folks at Springfield many of their guns have sights that are cold shrunk and then inserted with a big press. Therefore, hard to remove....

so a real one not a BFH
    sweet
so frist I should get some sights then beat out the old ones / cut out then get them fit and if a really needed to adjust them a bit
it should only take 2 hours to get to your area
but it dose help to know others have done it on xd's before
thank you for the info so I should beat them out the way the shells get ejected out from left to right

If set on doing it yourself you're pretty much right. Make sure to use a padded vise and you can always measure the dovetail width if in doubt as to which way to go. Once out oil and try to slip the new ones in, (on the wider side of course) and see how far it goes. If too tight remove a little material from the bottom and repeat until they can be tapped in without MAJOR force. Check the angles on the sight too and look for severe drag/rolling marks. Remove lightly as necessary and go s...l....o....w.....

    Good luck.

I did the sights on my first XD myself, and will personally never do it again. They are a BITCH. I had my next two XDs professionally done. There's a lot of chance of banging up your slide, plus it's just not worth the time and effort. I can recommend a shop that will install the sights for free if you buy from them and mail in your slide. Turnaround time is about a week, and only costs about $10 for shipping both ways.

I've got a Springfield XD 9 sitting at Springer Precision right now waiting on sights (XS Big Dots) and a few other mods.

No one in the Baton Rouge area would touch them. I was considering the punch and big hammer; but decided against it, mainly due to I didn't wanna bugger something up and then send it off!

They charge 30 bucks (plus the cost of the sights if you buy from them).
