Can someone ID this snake? It is about 7-8 inches long. Acting pretty lethargic probably due to cold weather.
I usually find 2 or 3 a year in the yard.

Looks like a racer snake, maybe a black masked racer in winter mode. They're good snakes, usually pretty fast but he's probably lethargic because of the cold.

Definitely not poisonous -- A non-poisonous snake is a good snake, please let him be!

Is it more brown than black? Is there a faint pattern.

Juvenile racers don't look like that.

I see those all the time in the front yard as I begin cutting the grass.

Not sure what they are but they don't bite and they are not venomous .

And since they are small I LIKE seeing them.

Looks like a smooth earth snake. Very common in yards. Based on the size you mentioned. They live in monkey grass, flower beds and come out at night in the yard. I saw an owl under a street light at the corner of our yard pick up 2 of them out of our yard one night. The neighbor lady kept bringing them to me to see if they were "ground rattlers". She would find them in the flower beds while weeding. I finally convinced her they were not "ground rattlers" and she stopped killing them.
