    I always thought that the term "pre-ban" referred to fully automatic weapons made prior to the ban in 1986

    A "pre-ban" in regards to an AR-15 would have to refer to the 1994-2004 Assault Weapons Ban. An AR-15 has always been a semi-automatic weapon although it could be converted to full auto prior to the 1986 ban.
