Do a search on here for "Krylon" and you'll see a couple of the rifles I'd years ago. Nothing wrong with painting a gun with Krylon. It's cheap and easy to touch up if well used or recoat if you change your mind.

Our Sniper teams had a few cans of tan brown and green and netting and did their M4A1s, sniper rifles, ACOG, and their M14s with the old rattle can to break up the lines of the rifle. The netting helped out a lot with shading. Looked great

This was my truck gun. Literally. It rode in the back, on carpet under a camper shell. It ended up rusting on one side.

    I used Krylon camo colors.

Killed a slew of rabbits with that little .22. It now lives next door, at my neighbor's.

I've rattle canned a few things. I bought an AR upper from a guy one time and it had a stainless bullbarrel. I dont like shiny parts on any of my guns. So I painted it flat black. Its held up really good.

I painted every Rifle I was ever issued in the Army. You just tape off what you dot want painted and Kylon away. It runs off after a few monte of use. We used Bowflage while It was available. Removing the Krylon isn't hard but for the most part the rifles were going back to Depot level maintenance at the end of a deployment anyway so when they went into the solvent tanks to be re-coated it came off. The big red solvent tank, I have no idea what carcinogen was in it, would remove the Krylon with a soaking.

I did it to an old S&W 9mm years ago.
I was trying to combat corrosion from carrying it at work.

It was some sort of teflon type of paint which after treating...then you'd put it in the oven. After a few hundred rounds..it started to come off of the rails on the frame.
I don't think I'd ever do it again myself. Maybe.....but probably not.

I've primed and painted a wood stock on a Marlin 75 for my wife it's holding up very well.
As soon as the rain clears out I'm gonna prime and paint the plastic stock a TC Hotshot for my sons 5th birthday.

In my experience both the krylon and rustoleum camo paints hold up pretty good, better than I would have thought. And if you want to add a level of protection, use a flat clear coat, and it will withstand a lot of abuse!

If you don't want it to peel off in a few months, clean with an alcohol based cleaner, sand (400 grit), and use this:

    bulldog-adhesion-promoters.JPG

I've never used the Bulldog adhesion promoter...so was reading up on it and ran across this post on a forum where a guy was bitching about a bad paint result on his car bezel. Just thought I would pass it along.

Buried in the Bulldog Tech Data sheet is " 9. Bulldog should not be used on Lexan® or polystyrene surfaces." This means anything polycarbinate. But the store doesn't give you this 12 page document. We use it religiously when painting 1000's of ABS plastic parts. You'd think they would put this exception clearly on their label!

lets assume that one morning I've painted or hydrafilmed my gun and later I want it off. Is this a reversible process? Or is the new process: buy more paint?
