    Not yet, a buddy is a Civil War buff so he has a metal detector for finding bullets......see if I can get him to do me a favor.

    Generally it will in fact be a metal rod on many residentially laid out boundaries. (about 2 inches below original mud line). It's cheaper then conrete ya know. I wouldn't spend the money on the surveyor unless you absolutley can't find them yourself or you suspect your neighbor may have dug them up to gain a few inches on your yard. And yes, it does happen.

    As emperor said it will either be a metal rod or a 3/4 inch pipe. Usually they are buried with pink of orange tape. They will be on the house side of the sidewalk
