Today the House and Governmental Affairs Committee passed HB1095 to the full House. http://www.mygov365.com/legislation/view/id/4f7d568649e51bf97a2a0300/tab/overview/

Essentially it gives all of LA's electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. This would have given our votes to Obama in 2008. There's no reason this should have left committee since there's 8 Republicans to the 5 Democrats on this committee. Unfortunately a few Republican turned and caused it to move to the full House.

This guy: http://house.louisiana.gov/H_Reps/members.asp?ID=73 walked out on the vote and didn't cast his.

This guy: http://house.louisiana.gov/H_Reps/members.asp?ID=48 voted in favor of the bill.

    So did this guy: http://house.louisiana.gov/H_Reps/members.asp?ID=88

The guys that voted for the bill represent Lafayette and Ascension respectively. Now I doubt this bill will pass the full house, but it should have died in committee.

Thought I'd let you guys know what your representatives are doing.

Why in the **** would anyone want to send the votes in favor of the winning person? That's makes no sense whatsoever.

After reading, it's a halfassed attempt at subverting the electoral college system. Not a good way to do it, if you ask me.

The electoral college system protects the smaller states' interests. The votes from Louisiana should go to the candidate that wins in the state of Louisiana, not the candidate that wins a national majority because of the east and west coast states.

Not originally from here, so i'm not familiar with the State Constitution. There isn't anything in the Constitution that would prevent this from happening?

    True.

However, I'll see that and raise you "that every state's electoral votes should be broken up by congressional district." The winner takes all electoral voting system effectively nullifies millions of votes, especially if you happen to live in a state with a rather large population center. Do you really think that ALL of california voted for BHO?

Even better yet, let's take it a step further and disband the electoral college. Replace it with the sitting members of the house of representatives. That's already determined by regional population, and fluctuates according to the census. Those reps would then be REQUIRED to cast a ballot for the presidential candidate that wins the popular vote in their DISTRICT. Voting against their constituent's choice would have to have severe and quick punishment. Death by hanging seems reasonable <to me>.

The way the last few elections have gone, I can't think of a more fair way to handle elections and make every single vote important.
