I've heard it actually started amongst some Moto cross athletes like Jeremy McGrath
but that's not why it took off like it did today.

The current Ice craze/phenomenon started b/c of this guy.

    Pete Frates.

Personally, I can dig anything that gets people having fun
and raises awareness for a worthy cause.

    Donating money is cool,
but completing challenges and having fun is too.

"SC Featured" tells the story of former Boston College captain Peter Frates,
who inspired the "Ice Bucket Challenge" phenomenon that has raised awareness --
and over $10 million -- for ALS.

Maybe bucketeer would be better. :D

You could replace one of those letters with an 'f' and I'd agree with you :dogkeke:

Seriously... Raising awareness is great, but it's overblown and I doubt anyone is doing anything beyond hopping on the bandwagon at this point. What ever happened to just quietly donating to a cause you believe in?

    :blah: Party Pooper.

How dare folks have fun and do something crazy to bring awareness.
You have to have SOMETHING that gets people excited to market the awareness. ;)

Did you read the Forbes article?

ALS donations are now looking at a 1,000+% Increase in Donations @ over $14,000,000.

    Mission Accomplished.

The only thing I disagree with is some of these "challengers" are doing the ice bucket (some not even a bucket! Cheaters!!) in order to get out of making a donation. I say, make a donation either way... don't use the idea to make a funny video just so your YouTube likes will go up and your friends will laugh at you.

Granted, it raises awareness... but everyone participating should then donate... not just those who don't want a bucket of ice water poured on their head.

The sad thing about this is this will only be a one time deal. In a year or so people will have moved on to the next "cool" thing to do and donations will stop.

Who cares? Man you guys are such downers  lol

Nothing can be sustained forever but why not celebrate an enjoy the temporary accomplishment
    vs NO accomplishment at all?

Better to have 14+ $Million$ raised than no awareness at all
and think of how many lives were affected and are being affected by this.
People are COMING together, getting together and doing a challenge.

For many this is their first ICE breaker into doing something FOR SOMEONE ELSE
or for something else besides themselves. Some kids were interviewed and said that doing the challenge
has taught them to THINK ABOUT OTHERS, even if they don't know them personally
and how they can help people that they might not necessarily can touch
    by raising money and awareness.

Ideas are being born to do this and other challenges for other diseases.

    General Statement:
How some folks keep trying to bring down positive movements always surprises me
especially when it has (0) actual affect on you personally. Which in return makes your disgust with
    it all the more selfish.

Were does this Debbie Downer attitude towards these type of things come from?

There's NOTHING sad about this challenge at all. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It's been nothing but positive for ALS and the many who have done the challenge.

That's not sad. That's awesome! regardless of how long the hype last.
The accomplishments already achieved are locked in.

    Cheer up folks! :hi5:

Yeah, I can be a downer when a loved one was taken from this world from this disease.

99.95% of facebook is drama, fiction, or ********.

I see the ALS benefit as the .05%, personally. Given your loss (which I'm sorry to hear of), I'd think you'd be thrilled that something this silly has gone viral into a frenzy of awareness and donation.
