looking to get a rifle thats cheap to use and good for practice. so far with my research the best option seems to be the HK 416 .22lr. has anyone here used or own this gun? is it possible to upgrade it to a .223 or .556 down the line? any thoughts or input is appreciated. thanks in advance

On HKPro quite a few guys have them and really like them. They're not a "competition" 22 or anything, but everyone seems to feel that they are damn accurate. You can't upgrade it, unless of course you mean by buying a complete upper and lower.

I've been eyeing them for a while, got my hands on a couple of the various "HK" 22's at Accurate on Florida Blvd, but I only buy rifles that I plan to shoot something with, and I don't currently hunt anything that I'd be willing to shoot with a 22. When I do get one though, it will be supressed.

If your goal is to have a rifle chambered in 22lr, have it function like a real AR, and want the ability to upgrade it in the future then I believe your best bet would be to go with a CMMG Quebec A. It looks, feels, and functions like a real AR and has a milspec lower so you can add a 223/5.56 upper in the future. Because it is a dedicated upper you will get pretty decent accuracy.
Another way that will be suggested is to just go ahead a get a 223/5.56 and buy a 22lr conversion kit. That may be a good option but the initial expense would be greater. Some would argue that they don't like running dirty 22lr through their 223 uppers (me being one of them) but it is a viable option.
Here is a CMMG below. Happens to be mine. I was looking to trade or possibly sell. PM me if you would like to discuss.
