I am doing some research for an industry partner that will most likely benefit everyone here.....financially.

If money were not an issue, in your opinion, what would be the top five magnified optics for a AR-15 STYLE FIGHTING CARBINE or Special Purpose rifle?

I am looking for tactical applications, not so much hunting. I am also not looking for super long range, but MarkIV, SB Short-dot, type of stuff.

    What say you?

IMO and in no particular order.

    1. Aimpoint T1 with a magnifier.
    2. Leupod Mk4 2.5-8
    3. Burris XTR 1-4,
    4. Nightforce 2.5-10
    5. Fixed 10x, Leupold Mk4 or US Optics ST10

On variable mag scope, depending you could probably substitute 1-4x, 2.5-8x, and 3-10x. I have a variable scope with up to 15x but I rarely ever find myself at much more than 10x. I tend to focus on the target when its up higher.

Can only answer based on personal experience. The Meopta 1-4x is my choice as a good all-rounder: nice glass, solid construction, decent field of view, 2 MOA dot reticle with illumination and side and middle cross hatches. True one power is fast up close with both eyes open and the 4 power works fine even beyond 300 yards.

I have a NF NSX 1x4, NICE glass, very rugged and fast, FC-2 reticle, Ive ben using this on two different rifle's, AR 15, AR10, I can just dial in for the 308 and its there, dial it back for the 223 same point of impact as before, I have a US Optics SN-4S coming my way soon, when I get it I'll post on here again what its like

Unfortunately technology has not caught up to the lighted reticles yet in any of the manufacturers and battery life sucks. But a lowpower variable and a small DR/JP type dot sight mounted low and off-set is hard to beat. You do pay weight penalty with a magnifying optic.

Thanks, but I was kinda looking for Specific models. Trijicon is kinda broad. LOL

    I know the SB Short-dot.
Which Nightforce for say 350-400 yard work.

Trijicon Acogs are fixed power, they do offer a 1-4 variable, personally I do not like the reticles they offer in the TR line.

Nightforce has the 1-4x. and then the 2.5-10X

Leupold has a 1-8X in the works and Vortex is offering some real good glass especially in the upper end scopes.

I really like the Valdada offerings.

Mine would probably a Nightforce NXS 5.5-20x.

I would say something along the lines of Vortex Razor, Premier, US Optics SN3, but even with an unbelievable deal I still wouldnt be able to afford them. And the NXS will do everything I ever need.:D

Meopta 1-4x with Larue mount and R&R Racing switch lever...1 or 4 with flip of a lever...or 2x with half a flip. You can have two of 'em for the price of the Elcan. That's the way we po' boys roll. ;)

NF NXS 1x4 is plenty for man size targets at 400, if the targets are a little smaller, then at least 6 power.

Of the optics not listed, get me a killer deal on a USO SN-4 1.5x6

Note, What I actually have is an even poorer boys plain old 1X aimpoints on my guns, which was 2 for about what the Meopta with the R&R in Larue would cost ;)

I use a EOtech 1x myself at similar cost...UNTIL those small steel targets get beyond 125 yards. I'd like even more than the 4x for six inch plates at 300 yards if I could get it, though 4x is workable to 400 or so unless targets are tiny.

To paraphrase Mr. T, pity the fool that takes a EOTech to a match like the Blue Ridge Mountain 3 Gun to compete in Tactical Optics. :D

    My list for carbine:

    1.) S&B Short Dot 1-4
    2.) Swarovski Z6I 1-4
    3.) Nightforce NXS 1-4 with FC-1 Recticle
    4.) US Optics 1-4 w/ JP-j1 Recticle
    5.) Vortex Razor HD 1-4 w/ EBR-556 Recticle

For medium range anything made by the above manufacturers in 2-10x range except i'd probably swap out the vortex with something by zeiss.
