What kind of snake is this?

I was blowing the leaves away from door and boy was I shocked when I saw this little thing. First snake that I have ever killed. Does anyone know what kind of snake it is?

I didnt shoot it. I shoveled it. All I knew is it was a snake it was right by my front door.

These are the kind of snakes you usually find holding on to the first fish you put on a stringer.

Definitely a non venomous due to the double row of scales after the anus. Couldn't tell you what kind without seeing the top of the snake.

I don't think it is a King Snake. We need to see the top side to make a positive identification. You should not have killed it. It was a beneficial snake.

Definitely not a speckled king. Lookin' at the small amount of the snakes side thats visable I believe it's either a banded or diamondback water snake. Now if you'll excuse me i have to go clean fingerprints off my laptop. There was a bug crawling all over my screen. Just now realized it was jimdana1942's little pet. Shouldn't take advantage of a "newbie" like that. Lol
