So we get this Sweet 72 Hot Rod Nova in the shop with a so called Restoration job done to it.
$5,000 later, the car should be road worthy.

It took many hours to get all the bugs worked out to make the car Road worthy.

I take it out for its FIRST test drive, and it sounds like the Rear axle has a Dead Cat in it.
Not a bearing noise or even your typical gear pattern noise, but a Super High pitch scrawl noise.
Craziest thing I've heard in 25 years. [ trust me, I have seen some crap too ]

Well, needless to say, the So called Rebuilt Rear Axle has to come apart. AND we cant get it apart !!!!!

This was the ONLY way it was coming apart ! Wasn't pretty.

So they welded the rear end for positive traction

Thats a good one, but no.

The Differential Cross Shaft Retaining Pin was so gaulled up, after removing the lock bolt, We could not even Air hammer the pin to move in any direction.
We rolled a pattern and the drive side was lucky to touch the tip of the gear.
The confusing part is, the Gears look new, all the bearings are new, Oil is brand new ?????
This car hasn't gone ANYWHERE ??? How can you screw something up this bad and it hasn't been driven yet ???

I've had a center pin snap in half in my Eaton locker with 4.56's. They decided it was better to basically cut the notch in the pin rather than remove the small bit of material from the ring gear for the pin to slide in and out freely. It was not a pretty site. The pin launch itself through the locker springs and out of the diff cover. Thankfully I was in a parking lot, making a u-turn when it happened. I can only imagine/fear how ugly it would have been to have both axle shafts walk out at highway speeds on 40" tires.

The Pin would not move. Best we could figure is that it was run without oil ?? then they added oil after it started making noise ? Im stumped on this one.

Since the parts were new, possibly installed dry ? I honestly don't know. Yes the pin looked new too. The lock bolt was definitely not factory.

I have found that the automobile world is like the firearm world, only ^2, when it comes to pissing matches, stupidity, ego, and corner-cutting.

No argument here! It gets worse when you're dealing with hotrods!

I live in the rectum of Louisiana amongst a bunch of half-rate speed shops. I used to know people who worked at all of them. I got out of that crowd as quick as I could, bought cars that were fast enough from the factory to keep me happy, and have NOT looked back.

Some people definitely should stay way the hell away from rebuilding diffs. A buddy thought he could handle it after watching it done on spike tv. After ruining a brand new set of gears and a trutrac he decided it was better to wait a week and let me do it.
