If you want irrigation water shallow is ok...but mine is 460 ft and draw pipe is 20 ft so figure the 20 ft water ain't good for drinking.

OTOH...few miles from here my Grandfather lived many years on a 30 ft shallow well. I drank that water a lot when I was a kid also. I think we had not near the surface pollution back then. He would have drilled that well in the 1920's or 30's. Hand pumped right in the kitchen sink, he was a plumber so it was " state of the art "

Shallow wells...2" screw pipe and a water hose 20 - 30 ft isn't really tricky.

If you start that kinda thing the EPA is NOT your friend, do it on the DL

Last one I drilled with a hand auger just north of Jennings was 22'. You don't want to use a drive point in the clays we have in SW La. Don't know if shallow water is still good to drink
or make you glow in the dark.

how do you drill with a hand auger, and put the pipe in? 1 1/4" or 2' pipe?
this would be mostly for irrigation, but who knows in an emergency!

Used a 6" auger that had a sleeve about 2' above the cutting edge to trap the cuttings. Used about 4' sections of 2" pipe to turn the auger. Had a 2" tee on top that threaded
onto drill pipe and had about 4' pieces on each side of tee for turning handles. When the sleeve was full of dirt pulled it up and emptied it. Added to 2" pipe as needed. After reaching water used 4" clay pipe for liner then ran well screen inside clay pipe. Feels like you pull the auger out 100 times to drill about 20'.
If you have water close it looks like the water hose on a pipe is the easier way to go.

Dang that is deep yrdawg.Im only 2 miles from you and most of the wells in my area are 300-350ft deep.
I do know a guy down the road,he said his was around 600ft deep.I know when they hit sand ,that's a
good sign and that is suppose to be the best water and most stable.I don't think I would be drinking any
water at 25 ft or less:(... There is a site.I will try to find it.Its for people with wells. They are a self run
organization for helping people and updating well progress.I will send it if I find it.

The 200' deep well was for drinking. I would be nervous drinking from a shallow well in Louisiana. With all of the farming. Pesticides, fertilizer, etc.

I am in north walker, our well is 460 ft. also. Very good water, personally I think it better than most bottled water as far as taste. When it comes to what's actually in our water table nowadays, I can't say, but I feel safer drinking our well water than I do city water. We run 3 and sometimes 4 households on one well.
