The Marlin 39 came in three different serial number ranges. The first group had no prefix of which nearly 12000 were made from 1922 -1925. The next range of serial numbers were prefixed with an "S" and go up to S17000 and were thought to be made from 1926 - 1935. The third range utilized a HS prefix that go up to HS18000. Also, for a short period of time some 39s were marked with a star on the tang until Marlin discontinued the practice. The 39 evolved into the 39A and the Marlin Golden 39A represents the oldest and longest continuously produced shoulder firearm in the world.
