So its a classic nature vs nurture?
So its a classic nature vs nurture?
Pitbulls are great pets.i had one and my freind has 3 of them.the only aggressive pits I've seen and encountered we're the ones that were not neutered/ spayed and/or were train to fight .im preaty sure that goes for most dogs.
Some of what is said here makes sense. A pit attacked my cat, in my fenced in back yard. The pit forced itself through a gap in the two fence lines. It never once snapped at me, as I choked the life out of it. It didn't release my cat, until the life went out of it's eyes. The cat survived, but required over $500 in vet bills. The pit wasn't so fortunate. I threatened to sue the dog's owner for the vet bills, but never did.
I think they are dangerous animals. If your pit gets loose, and ends up on my property, I promise to return the remains. In general, I love animals, and plan to have a dog once either my wife, or I retire.
I'm sorry to hear about your cat, but blaming the breed? I don't think that holds much water. It's a bigger animal that saw a littler animal that was running away. Even a wiener dog would have gone for it. Probably to less effect, but you understand my point.
Do all dogs chase animals smaller than themselves? and when they get there kill them? No, but some breeds are more known for it than others.
Your Weiner dog argument is really what's not going ot hold much water
There is a major difference in Breeds and their respective `Prey Drive`. Weiner Dogs, don't have one as well as many other docile breeds.
Like I mentioned earlier. Buying an unregistered Pit is very risky being as the whole reason this breed exploded like it did was indeed the supply and demand of Dog Fights hence the reason most don't have papers.
A papered Dog can be traced, and most who take the time to purchase and register a dog is generally much more responsible than your average "BYB Pit owners and Breeders"
Personally I'd have no issue with a State mandate to snip all unregistered Pits both male & female. The bite/attack statistics provided by medical resources are HIGHLY stacked against the breed. The breed is being destroyed and watered down. Most Pits we see are not really what the official breed is supposed to be or look like. They're something else.
YES! There are lovely BYB Pits out there who wouldn’t harm a fly. I’m not naive about that, but they are far and few between. They are also 4 & 5 Generations removed from Fighting Pits. There are websites available that merely keep up with medical record sources of dog bites and what type of dog it was.
STATS don’t lie, they just sit there.
I’d love to own a Pit, they are some handsome dogs and I might one day. But not soon. Not until my young children are in their late teens and getting ready to get out of my house and you can bet it’ll be a Pure Bred from a Good Pedigree.
Known for their long and low bodies, they are eager hunters that excel in both above- and below-ground work.
Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany. The goal was to create a fearless, elongated dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers.
The breed became popular in the U.S. during the early 1900’s, but fell out of favor during World War I. After the war, a few U.S. breeders slowly rebuilt the gene pool by importing German stock, and the breed began to increase in popularity again.
The problem isn't with the pit bull and people. It is with the pit bull and other dogs.
They love people, but when they see another dog, they go nuts, its just instinct.
I was offering my services free to kill all pit bull puppies and any pit bulls needing
gone.
My 6 year old small house dog was mauled and killed in front of my wife. She
was in a fenced in yard with a 6ft wooden fence. The pit bull charged through the
fence to kill my dog.Needless to say.The dog was dead in 3 days after humane
society put him down. Then my attorney sued the hell out of the neighbor.
The money could never replace my dog,but after each puppy I killed and big pits.
I did feel a little bit better each time blood was splattered from any pit.FPB dogs.
WORTHLESS POS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a good idea of how i felt towards them. The dogs i have seen bite people the most are the small lap dogs and we don't hear much about it in the news because its not as extreme. Problem is the power they have and the temperment that goes along with it. Any dog over 50 lbs could do a ton of damage in this case. Do they have as much power or the temperment of a pit/bull? No.. I see germans used for a long time and still till this day by law inforcement for a good reason. They listen. Once a pit/bull gets mad or hurt it seems as though they blank out and get tunnel vision and no command other than death can release that grip.
I may be extremly wrong on this account and the number or service dogs that might be pits/bull would be few and far between the temperment is our doing and breeding. Wish they didn't have that switch because they would probably replace a lot of other dogs as far as work dogs, pets etc.

Wiener dogs do indeed have a MASSIVE prey drive. They were bred to hunt. Try letting a smaller animal than the wiener dog around it (hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, etc. and see what happens). My wiener argument stands tall and proud.

Like you said, Stats don't lie. Neither do accurately reported facts.

Other than that, I agree with your post. You can't make a whore a house-wife, and you can't take a dog bred for aggression and make it docile and loving. However, not all Pits are bred and treated this way. I have met plenty. Maybe you have met docile bred wiener dogs, but the one's I know are vicious Freudian-inspired killing machines of all things smaller than them.
Y'all are missing the point. I'm sure they are sweet loving dogs. Until they snap. Does every pit snap? Of course not but enough of them do that it makes them all questionable.
Another point. Two pro pit guys say they were attacked by different breeds. I'll accept that any dog is capable of attacking but and here's a really big BUT... do either of you think you would be here at all if it had been a pit that attacked you? If you lived through it you would have had to have a lot of reconstructive surgery instead of a few stitches.
Using big words in caps like 'MASSIVE' doesn't mean it's going to help your argument.
Also stating why Weiner Dogs were (here I'll do it too) ORIGINALLY bred for 400 YEARS ago doesn’t help either. We’re talking about TODAY.
Are Weiner Dogs bred TODAY for their ability to;
"dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers."
I'm seriously, does that sound like a F.ing Weenie Dog to you!?!?
TODAY junior!
As of TODAY, Pits have a unique Prey Drive that sets them apart backed by the absurd amount of Attacks.
If you honestly believe that Weenie Dogs have a `MASSIVE` prey drive, then we’re probably not going to make it much further in this discussion.
Excellent Point Jay.
I had that very same conversation a few years ago with a young man. Always talking about how bad ass his Pit was
Then when we were harping on him about how the breed has a reputation etc. etc. he blurted out, "well a few months back(yea right I was thinking ) my uncles Weimaraner bit me on the leg..yata yata"
I said the same as you Jay, "And what if it would have been your Pit"?
He says "**** that MotherFer would have eaten the **** out of my......aww ****, I see what you're saying there mayne, damn dog, you got me there"
