$1400's not bad. I might be the only person who buys based on price, but for That price I'd seriously consider one too. My XPS is getting a little long in the tooth to run current gen games (I'm a gamer, biggest thing I use comps for), and I'll be in the market for a new one instead of another round of upgrades (mine currently sounds like a jet engine, I didn't shop around enough when I bought my last power supply)

Stick with PCs then, Macs aren't great for gaming. They're made for cool guys doing cool guy stuff.

ETA: i'm not actually a big gamer anymore. I used to be, but this last year of school and then trying to find a real job has put a real cramp in my style. I've always loved games and I intend on playing the hell our of some Total War: Rome 2 when it comes out, but that's about it.

You can game on a mac, you will just need to install windows (most who do just use the windows for games, then switch back and forth to Mac OS for everything else...)

I used to think macs were overpriced and I was intimidated by learning a new operating system. Then I borrowed a friends macbook. Had my 2007 macbook ever since. Zero problems with hardware or OS. Can't say that for my last two windows machines. Got tired of my mom's pc having problems at LEAST once a year. Just got her a 2013 macbook.

On the Refurbs: The free RAM upgrade some people get aside, I don't think a used machine for 200 off is worth it to me. Might as well pony up for the new one or buy an even cheaper one on ebay, craigslist, etc, especially when the next new thing comes out.... IMO.

I DO hate all of apple's proprietary crap though. It's much too difficult to put movies on my ipad. I don't want to jail break, etc. Just make it easy. And why doesn't it have a real usb port? That **** is annoying... All the proprietary nonsense used to be windows, but apple is just as bad or worse with it these days... Love the machines, love the OS, hate the difficulty just adding a damn video, etc...

Besides Apple I'm not a fan of refurbs. But in their case they spare no expense in reconditioning the units and you get the same warranty. Even though it's only a couple hundred bucks, it's literally as good as buying new with the only difference being you don't get a fancy box. I actually shopped used for months and thanks to Apples holding their value I couldn't find a deal. I paid $100 less for my refurb than the cheapest USED comparable model I found on eBay.

Also, instead of saving money I actually opted to use the price difference to upgrade the processor and graphics card. So basically I paid the same as a new base model but got a better machine. I can live without the cool box. :)

Sounds like in your case is was the best option Speedracer. I didn't realize they offered "the same" warranty. I still think you could pick up one cheaper if you got the out going model when they introduce they "next new thing", especially if there are major changes. Can't always wait around for such things though. I just paid full price from the apple store for my mom's because I didn't have time to shop around, etc and her pc was down AGAIN. The time, aggravation, and money wasted keeping a windows machine running for her more than justify the expense of the macbook though. She's portable now too, so when she has to evacuate on the next hurricane she can take it with her. (Besides the car I bought her a couple of years ago, I think it's now her most valuable possession too. lol)

    Too difficult?

You don't even need to hook it up. I have mine set up to automatically connect wirelessly whenever iTunes is opened. I just drag whatever song or movie into the iPhone or iPad and it copies over wirelessly.

I do question the lack of a standard micro USB port though. The new lightning connector is VERY nice. No more fumbling to figure out which way is up.

    lol.

I create on my computer. Tablets, readers, and consoles are for consumption. Heck, I create on my iPad too.

    Gaming is consumption.

Besides software development for work, I use my home computer to create all manner of stuff. From websites to music (mashups lately) to 3D illustration to photographic illustrations to icon sets to video. I was a professional photographer (yes, I was paid for it) for years and have been a Photoshop user since the product has existed. I've taught it for a number of years too.

To me a computer is a tool. I choose the best tool that enables me to get my work done in the most efficient and elegant manner possible. When / if Windows eclipses Mac in this regard, I will move back.

BTW, anyone try a windows RT tablet?

They're pretty nice. Close to a full PC and MUCH better than those craptastic netbooks of years past.

I have never figured out how to put a movie on my ipad to watch on a plane or on a trip.

I guess I'm "that guy", but I have owned 2 iMacs and a couple of Macbooks and I still go back to PC. Matter of fact, my last iMac, a mid 2011 model, I didn't even use OSX at all on it.

I don't have the virus and malware issues most PC users have simply because just as there are bad parts of town that you don't go to, there are bad parts of the internet as well and I know where they are and how to avoid them.

I don't hate on Mac users, its just like an HK/Glock flamewar. Both will do the same thing, only thing is one is twice as expensive as the other. It's your money, spend it on what you want.

"I'm switching to PC!" said no one ever.

People that hate on Macs have never owned one. I know, I used to be one of them. Switched recently and never looking back. They are well worth the price and have about 4x the resale value of PCs.

You sir are totally wrong. I, for one went from PC to apple back to PC. As a matter of fact I have a iMac that I bought a year ago that I used for 3 months and has been setting in the closet ever since for sale. I'll take $600 for it. I paid .......$1300 for it. It does need a new keyboard though. The one that came with it broke and the one I replaced it with is a POS. I also have a iPad2 for sale for $200.

The reason I hate apple and went back to PC? Third party software!!! Even if it says it will run on a mac it probably won't. Screw apple and their proprietary ********.
