I've noticed that since the most recent gun/ammo shortage and subsequent hysteria , there seems to have been a noticeable decline in C&R discussion here . Am I wrong ? I'll admit my interest has cooled a bit but I attribute that to just a change in my own direction . I have a couple of old rifles I'm considering putting up for sale but it seems like a bad time .

I think the market has finally reached a saturation point on many guns. Seems like everyone and their grandma has an AR now. Plus, people were more concerned about ammo availability of modern weaponry and spent available resources on that instead of buying collector type pieces.

I've noticed on this forum that the C&R threads frequently consist of people destroying history.

I hope the price is dropping on some cool C&R's :)

Not to mention the variety of c&r weapons is somewhat lacking.

Plus the ammo shortage cuts into how often I can go shooting. Oh, and a lack of weapons with cheap ammo.

When MN's were at their peak ammo for them was plentiful and cheap. Not so much now.

I let my license expire. Sometimes I have regrets and sometimes I am thankful for letting it go. I find more c n r guns I want now that my 03ffl is gone but I really don't have the money for those now. last one I bought was a 1895 Nagant. I find it very interesting along with several others.

I've been enjoying mine. Prices are steadily decreasing. One of the problems of the last year as we all know has been availability. I was actually able to find 7.62x25 last weekend. Mosin prices are up but it seems the Chinese market has opened up a bit more. I've picked up some nice items. The market is getting softer. I didn't think prices would be high for this long but I'd bet by the fall we'll see some nice sales. If the market continues to get flooded with Walmart AR's then there might be a price drop in type 53s and 9130's etc one would hope.

Louisiana is not exactly great C&R country to start with and it lacks a solid C&R customer and dealer base. I believe this forum reflects that.

In my experience there are two fields of C&R: The casual who are focused on cheap current imports (which are drying up), and the dedicated who are focused on historically significant and investment grade C&R (which is increasing in activity).

The forums dedicated specifically to C&R seem to be increasing in activity. The GunBoard and Lugerforum are two examples.

The C&R inventories of stores dedicated to the market like Collector's Firearms in Houston and Simpson Ltd in Galesburg appear to be quite strong with brisk sales and steadily turning inventories.

The C&R auction houses such as Rock Island and Arms and Armour have been reporting record events over the last few years, as significant and long standing collections of C&R come to market.

I myself shed almost all of my C&R weaponry a few years ago for several reasons: They were getting too rare and valuable to shoot, and I'd exhausted the research information in them, this coupled with the recession and a divorce offered me the opportunity to focus on the guns I felt I could safely shoot and enjoy. I still keep my eye out for bargains, but now with an intent to turn them for a profit rather than refill my safe.

No Longer Inexpensive. I saw a batch of CZ82s were $280 each. I think not as many 50-year-old designs are put on the list. And why is the 1895 Nagant on the list, I thought 100-year-old guns were not controlled. I guess production dates are the key or all 1911's would be on it. I really wanted guns with character and history. I thought the pristine weapons were boring. I made the mistake of selling a WWII SA Garand with these pock marks on the butt on the right hand side and figured out that the shooter was seating his clips before loading. I still have one with a cut in the stacking swivel. I have had people point out dark areas they said were blood stains.
Dang every time I tote that heavy gun and ammo out to the range and pass a few rounds through it, I imagine HAVING to shoot that 30-06 or 303 all day or all night, when every round counts. If no more rounds, then fix bayonets.
I have read accounts of battles from closed in spaces using black powder and the soldiers have to overcome the heat, smoke and griminess of expending all ammo, ending up dead and covered in blood, grease and soot.
For me there is a lot more to the C-N-R thing than just the cheap gun and ammo or the collector's grade specimen.

I think it's just because they aren't as cheap and plentiful as the used to be.

They were great rifles for unbelievable prices. Now they're beat up rifles that cost what you expect to pay.

That and the sources are finally seeming to run dry. You seen the prices skyrocket on the old Mosin Nagant M38's and M44's? Used to get them for 60-70 bucks. Plan on spending over 200 now!

I sold all my Mosins cuz they kicked like a mule. I used the money to buy an M1A. I also sold my Enfield. I never shot my C&Rs. They just sat in the closet. I like shooting my K31 a lot and shot it in a vintage rifle match.

I think its more like lack of C&R than lack of interest. Pretty much all that is left are Mosin Nagants at $149+, Tokarevs, and a few Yugo Mausers. And I don't think we'll ever return to the post-WWII heyday. I don't think the current generation of international/domestic politicians are ever going to let us have the current stuff as surplus.

I still have mine! I bought the ammo when it was cheap, and I bought enough to shoot for the rest of my life. I'll pass 50,000 rounds or so on to my son-in-law when my 4 year old daughter finally marries. I figure that when I die I'll still have about that many left over. When I bought my C&Rs I figured out that the cheap ammo wasn't going to last forever, so I stocked it pretty deep - enough to last for the rest of my life. Damned shame about the buffer zone shooting range closing.

I let mine expire, but I can just pick anything up now on my 07/02 if anything interesting comes up. I haven't seen much interesting priced good lately. I think I am going to put my Tula Hex Mosin up for sale in the shop.

With limited resources and unlimited wants the potential gun ban absolutely made people shift their focus. God forbid 30 round magazines were banned for another 10 years and you bought a peened K98 for $500 instead of 50 pmags.

Fortunately we are still able to do so, had things not worked out in "our" way I bet you could have traded that case of pmags for several Mausers.

Meanwhile the same bottom of the bucket peened Mauser that was run over by a KettenKrad is still on the shelf.
