NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - “Everybody called 911 and told them a person was in the car. It looked like she passed out,” says a neighbor.
But, the woman behind the wheel of the car was actually shot and she died on the scene. Police say someone shot her as she drove in the 7200 block of Morrison Road.
“We saw the bullet holes in the car. One of the neighbors told me he could see about three bullet holes in the car on the driver’s side,” says a neighbor.
A neighbor, who doesn’t want to be identified, told FOX 8, surveillance video showed two people running from the scene, just after the shooting.
Police released pictures, and say they want to talk to those individuals about what happened. Just after being shot, the victim continued down Morrison, hitting parked cars.
Debris still litters the street.
“She was able to straighten up and proceed on Morrison. One of the neighbors said he thought he could see her holding a blanket or something to her side. We figured she was trying to stop the bleeding, but she probably passed out,” said the neighbor.
As police investigated the homicide, another call came in. Police say someone carjacked a 76-year-old woman on Martin Drive.
“They don’t care. They don’t care if police are right there. They will do it in front of police,” says a neighbor.
Only about two blocks from the homicide scene, police say someone approached the woman, pulled out a gun and demanded her keys. She handed them over the carjacker took off in the woman’s vehicle.
“We have to live in fear and people work hard for the things that they earn and to be carjacked is really sad. I just think we need more police officers in New Orleans East,” says a neighbor.
Just a few hours after the shooting and carjacking in the Spring Lake Neighborhood, violence unfolded a few miles away in an IHOP parking lot off of the I-10 Service Road.
Surveillance video shows a man breaking into a car and rummaging through it.
Police say the victim, an IHOP employee, walked outside and the gunman shot her.
She’s in stable condition.
People who live and work in the New Orleans East are tired of the violence that they say seems to surround them every day.
“I mean, even when you’re getting in your car, you hear gunshots. You have to look around and see if you’re safe, but you’re not safe at all,” says a neighbor.
Police need your help to solve these crimes. If you know anything that will help, call CRIMESTOPPERS.
