I was told that when you shoot at one of these ranges Terribonne Sheriff's for example, they do an NCIC on you to make sure you can legally own a gun and they keep a record of known gun owners. Presumably to make it easier to confiscate them if the laws change. Is this true or is my friend just being paranoid? I know that this happened to registered gun owners after Katrina in N.O. Their guns were confiscated and it took months to get them back. He won't shoot at a police range only private ones.

Delta: Everyone that responded has been told to deny the checks are happening. Finger print readers are being installed at the Office of Homeland Securities' expense at thousands of retailers all over the state. Be very careful where and how you place your hands/fingers on counter tops. The newest readers are being installed on entry doorway handles.

I shoot at the Terrebonne range all the time, and no, there's no checks. You just have to sign in and list your name, address, phone#, and Drivers License#. I doubt they're doing any actual checks.

When the Iberia S.O. first opened their range to the public they would take your photo and mail you an I.D. card in the mail. I would be willing to bet that they did NCIC checks on some of the people.

The I.D. card thing didn't last long at all, maybe a couple of months. I'm guessing that they found it not worth the effort to issue the cards. I still have my card somewhere.

I don't think it was the RO's that would have done the checking. It would have been handled by full time Dept. personnel.

The RO's that were working there were some great guys.

No kidding, Art. Interesting. What year was that and who was the sheriff? You ended up with a collectible ;)

Personally, another NCIS check doesn't bother me much, but my head is thick enough I don't need tinfoil

FWIW, I spend enough time at the New Iberia Sheriff's range that I've been thinking of getting a rubber stamp for the liability release forms to save my writing hand :D

Be careful, I also heard after you are done shooting, they pick up any brass you may have missed and dust it for prints and run it through IBIS.

I know at the old Iberville range, you had to show an ID that proved you lived in the Parish, thats all. Sheriff just wanted to make sure he was only helping possible voters.
