I suppose it could be a good idea with a little training, but the second pic shows one of the guys standing near the door of a residence in his camo shorts with his rifle by his side in his left hand. I would think that at least having it in a sling on your chest might make it a little more handy. hopefully the pic was posed and the guys are a little more careful than that.

We, the good people, need to do our own policing.

I'm telling you, crime would disappear if the citizens took care of their own business.

    I completely agree, but...

Someone buy that guy holster for the handgun that he is pointing at his own head. Please do not show up on my back porch looking in my window with an AR15.

It that a handgun or a radio/cellphone?
In the 2nd pic, it's a cell phone.

    From the caption:
"Alton Travis, who keeps a firm hold on his AR-15 assault rifle, looks into the window of a home Friday in St. Helena Parish’s Sixth Ward after he saw a suspicious car parked in the driveway. Travis spoke with the homeowner by telephone, who assured Travis everything was okay. Travis is one of several residents in the ward who are conducting armed patrols to help fight a recent increase in break-ins and burglaries."

    :)

"Despite the lack of success on their friday patrol, Travis and Birch said there are still benifits to the patrols."

Dosen't sound like anyone's property was disturbed while they were on their Friday patrol, so how are they exactly defining success? That is what concerns me about the whole thing. Are they looking to stop burglaries or are they looking to catch a crook. Two different goals, and the latter should be left in the hands of local law enforcement. Might not be a popular opinion around here, but it's the one I got.

I can only see this working if the community is a small enough one where everybody knows everybody . Like how he calls about he white car in the drive way . I can see it maybe working as a deterrence if enough ppl volunteer . However acting as a crime fighting part on someone elses property may result in some trouble .
