I'd like to build my son an AR15 and give it to him as a gift. He lives in Texas and of course I'm in Louisiana. Would we need to go through an FFL and if so, would it need to be one in Texas or Louisiana? Thanks for any light you can shed!

    Paw, is that you Paw?
I'm told my paw was out of N.Louisiana and also called D**k Slinger Jones
I'd like a spiffy AR-10 Paw if you feel it in you're heart.
Throw in a few mag's and 1K of ammo if you will Paw.
I also like stealing hogs too, Is this a family trait?

It is easy. I sold an SKS to a guy in NY state prob 10 years ago. His FFL emailed me a copy of his license prior to shipping. He paid me and I shipped the SKS to his local FFL. His FFL executes the physical transfer. Have your son locate a local FFL in TX, set it up with him (the FFL), then ship the rifle to the FFL in TX. Like CavalryJim stated above.

A friend in Texas gave me a BCM a few years ago. He mailed it to a FFL at the Pawn Shop in Denham Springs and I picked it up there.

Don't ship... next time you see him in person , loan it to him.....

Admin note: It is illegal to give, sell, transfer, or trade a firearm to a resident of another state without going through a FFL. This is a federal felony. Don't do this.

You could buy everything except the lower and let him get that in Texas. Next time he comes to visit, you two have a build lesson and test run. Back to Texas he goes with his perfectly legal AR build along with the bonding time with dad and knowledge that he gained!

It sounded like he wanted to assemble parts on a serialized receiver, not an 80%.

jbadjones, use an FFL in Tx. Get the receiving FFL's license, ship it to him, have your friend properly acquire it on a 4473.

Just give you kid the gun. My dad lives in Texas and I loan him guns all the time. I will have to show him this thread and ask him why he never loans me any guns.

I said nothing about an 80%. Son can buy a SERIALIZED stripped lower in Texas, bring it with him when he comes to see dad, build the firearm, then take it back to Texas.

    Loaning is legal
Loaning it to him with the intention of him crossing state lines with it would still require going through a FFL. Again, trying to find loopholes in laws is how folks get hit with an unnecessary federal felony. It's $20 bucks to transfer a gun to someone legally (plus shipping).

You are reading more into the law that is stated ..paragraph 3

.A person may loan or rent a firearm to a resident of any state for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes,
The OP doesn't want to loan a gun, he wants to gift a gun. Why suggest loan it unless you're trying to find a workaround...

I guess it was ignorance on my part . I wasn't advocating that anyone should attempt to evade the law . I just thought that it was more complicated than it needed to be . Actually , I still do , but if that's how it has to be ...

Just opening up his options... in case he changes his mind and wants it back hahahaaa :dunno:
Yeah....that sounds a lot like a transfer and not a loan. No reason to not go through a FFL and not risk jail.

No worries. It is more complicated than it should be, but unfortunately that's how the law is written.
