Does the 17hmr damage the meat much on small game such as rabbit and squirrel? I've seen 22 mag tear things up pretty bad.

Use the fmj. They still do a good bit of damage to a squirrel with a body shot but no as bad as the others.

    This +1.

From my own experience, .22 Mag HPs do quite a bit more damage than the .17, and with the exception of Hyper Velocity .22LR ammo, the .17 will do a little more damage than standard .22LR HP loadings.

This^^ Just pop em in the head if your worried about meat. The .17 hmr has got to be one of my favorite rifles to shoot. I have an el'cheapo marlin. It still amazes me the shots I make with it. What rifle are you shooting?

I'm shooting a savage 93 v17. I shot apples with fmj. It went straight through. I was wondering what it did with meat.

fmj rip a hole. other than soft points and fmjs , the other rds be it hollow pt or plastic tip are made for explosive fragmention, cci fmgs are my favorite , 17 is badass on squrriels

Take head shots and you'll be alright..
Only benefit I could see of the .17 HMR is if you small game hunt on lands with hogs. It'll take down a hog pretty easily with a head shot. Other than that it's just a little overkill for squirrels and rabbits..But they are super fun to shoot

If you don't hit squirrels in thr head, thr HP's and Ballistic Tip rounds will just about ruin a squirrel. ......This is why I use thr 22 lr for them...
