My father in law gave me a mint 1971 Remington 1100. I just started duck hunting this season and have used a friend beretta automatic thus far. I also have a mossberg 500 20g that i have used in the past, so i am used to a pump as well.

The issue is, the barrel on the 1100 is a21 inch barrel and to purchase a 26" barrel would be right under $300. I'm not sure if i would even want to subject that 1100 to the harsh conditions of duck hunting. My other option is to buy a new pump and not worry about beating up the Remington. Should i spend the 300 on a new barrel or a new gun?

    Thanks in advance.

Tough choice. Spend around $300 for a used shotgun, or a barrel. If the 1100 is in really nice shape, I would hit the used gun places for an auto or maybe a 870 Wingmaster. You can always buy that barrel later on.

It's hard enough to find an 1100 that old in mint condition. I'd keep it in the closet until you run across another barrel at a gun show or pawn shop. It'll be a tough find, but it is definately doable. Until then, get an older 870 for cheap, use and abuse it. It will take it and it's not a show gun and is very trustworthy as long as you use it as a tool and clean it properly.

Older age and gray hairs just mean wisdom right? Like a fine wine, it gets better with time!:mamoru:

    LOL, yes, wisdom. LOL

OT, and I am stealing this from someone unknown, but the patina of use of a gun makes it more attractive to me. But, I can see if a gun is pristine there may be a desire to keep it so.

Thanks for the eBay tip. I think I will buy the 28" modified choke barrel and buy a Winchester sxp. That will give me two functioning guns for under $500. I can use the 1100 for doves and rabbit and squirrels and the sxp for duck I'm the marsh.

My dad gave me an 1100 about the same age as that one when I was about 15. I took it duck hunting a lot and regret doing so the older I get. I wish I would have kept it in the shape that it was given to me in. And one day I can pass it to my son. I know it's just an 100 but I like the sentimental value of it. I would buy another gun if it were me.

You can get a Remchoke barrel for it off ebay for pretty cheap. I just sold one not to long ago.....I have a 1971 Trap Model 1100 in Mint condition and I was thinking same thing as you, but my Beretta Urika does the job just fine lol all I could see is the Gator Tail tossing it around in the boat and it wouldn't be worth it.

Buy a new (used) gun. You'll be happy you did. If you're used to a pump that you can use as a paddle as well, get a used one.

I bought an 1100 back in the early 70's. Yea, I'm old. It was a skeet model. I was told at the time not to shoot anything but light field or skeet loads in it. It also had a 2 3/4 inch chamber. It was made lighter than other 1100's and wouldn't stand up to the heavy loads required for steel loads of today. Might want to check into that. I bought a 28 inch full choke barrel, had it cut down to about 24 inches and installed Browning Invector tubes in it. Only use it for rabbit and squirrels.

I bet someone has an 1100 they want to use for 3 gun or home defense that would like a shorter barrel. Maybe put up a post offering to trade short for long?

Before you decide anything try patterning that 21" at different ranges.

I have an 1100 LT-20 with the 28 inch modified choke barrel. A new rem-choke barrel would cost more than what my parents paid for the shotgun in 1987.

They got it for me at the K-Mart on Gause Blvd in Slidell.
