why was a 2yr old in city part at midnight?

oddly enough, he was with his father, who's looking more and more like the prime suspect for this mystery.

It'd be funny if there were a traffic camera in teh area that showed nothing happened at that time.

I really hope the kid is ok, and alive :hs:

They haven't confirmed that it's the child they've been looking for, but I think it's pretty obvious.
Child's corpse found near Central City playground

New Orleans police have discovered the body of a young child in a city playground four blocks from where a New Orleans man said his son was abducted around 11:30 p.m. Friday by three men wielding AK-47s.

Officer Janssen Valencia said the small corpse was found behind a house at 1940 Jackson Avenue, which backs up to a wooded area at Van McMurray Playground.

Police have not identified the body, which according to a police source was found inside a bag. John Gagliano of the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. and pulled his sedan to the rear of the house.

Ja' Shawn Powell, 2, has been missing since shortly before midnight Saturday.

Powell's father told investigators that he and his son were standing at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Brainard Street late Friday night when three men forced him to the ground at gunpoint, took his son and fled the area in a dark, 2000-model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon with black tinted windows and shiny paint, Valencia said in a news release issued mid-morning Saturday.

There were no license plates on the vehicle, which was last seen traveling north on Jackson Avenue, Valencia said. The suspects were described as African-American men, about 29 years old, with shoulder-length dread locks and standing between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet tall.

State Police issued an Amber Alert early Saturday morning for the missing boy, who was described as about 2-1/2 feet tall and weighing about 48 pounds.

An unkempt lot spanning about two blocks in the heart of Central City, Van McMurray Park is located at Jackson Avenue and Daneel Street, about four blocks from the alleged abduction. The park backs up to the site of Central City Headstart, where a colorful jungle gym cast an eerie backdrop for Saturday afternoon's gruesome discovery.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the New Orleans Police Department via the non-emergency number 504.821.2222, or Crimestoppers at 822.1111 or toll free at 1.877.903.7867. Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn up to $2,500 for tips that lead to an indictment.

    Father of missing child arrested
    by Brendan McCarthy, The Times-Picayune
    Saturday January 03, 2009, 3:00 PM

Less than two hours after the discovery of a young child's corpse in a Central City playground, police are in the process of filing charges in connection with the murder against the father of Ja' Shawn Powell, the toddler who has been missing since late Friday.

The man, whose name nas not been released, will be booked into Orleans Parish Prison within the hour, said NOPD spokesman Janssen Valencia.

Meanwhile, authorities have not yet identified the small corpse that was found early Saturday afternoon behind a house at 1940 Jackson Ave., near a wooded area at Van McMurray Playground.

The park is about four blocks from the Powell's father told police the boy was abducted by three men wielding AK-47s late Friday night.

The man told investigators that he and his son were standing at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Brainard Street around 11:30 p.m. Friday when three men forced him to the ground at gunpoint, took his son and fled in a dark, 2000-model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon with black tinted windows and shiny paint, Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release issued mid-morning Saturday.

State Police issued an Amber Alert early Saturday morning for the missing boy, who was described as about 2-1/2 feet tall and weighing about 48 pounds.

In an interview Saturday with WWL-TV, the child's mother, Daniella Powell, said the father, whose name has not been released, had been ordered Dec. 4 to pay $446 in regular child support, as well as $4,000 in back child support.

The father called about 8:30 p.m. Friday asking to spend the weekend with Ja' Shawn, she said. The man picked up the toddler shortly thereafter. He called back several hours later to say that the child had been kidnapped, then quickly hung up, Powell said.

Powell said she called her child's father back to ask if he had reported the kidnapping to the police. The man said he had reported it, though when Powell called the police herself, she was told the father had not called, she said.

The father changed his story several times, first telling Powell that a white woman had taken Ja' Shawn out of his arms, then saying that a group of men took the child after looking for a man named Johnny and asking for money, Powell said.

This thing stunk the minute I first heard about it.
I had a gut feeling that dad had done the deed.
And I love the "wielding AK 47s" bit.
    What a piece of ****!
